Calming the Sea — sketch 2b

Calming the Sea — sketch 2b

Project Description:

In Mundus Subterraneus, written in 1664, Athanasius Kircher proposed the idea that the oceans we know of are connected by channels to underground oceans, pumping water through openings in the sea floor, thus causing the tides.

Following this idea of subterranean channels, we will meet on Zoom to add just another layer of channels to unite as a global orchestra.

We will explore multichannel near-simultaneity, exploiting transmission latencies and temporal offsets, experiencing destructive and constructive interferences — overlapping, amplification and extinction of waves.

To attach your body of water to the orchestra, please install Zoom on your smartphone first.

iOS: https://apps.apple.com/de/app/zoom-cloud-meetings/id546505307

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=us.zoom.videomeetings

Open the app and create an account. Then go to “Settings” > “Meetings” and make sure that “Use Original Sound” is activated.

Please take your smartphone with you and go to your nearest sea or river shore until you are within arm’s reach of the water. Ideally you should be able to hear the sound of the waves. Please also make sure that you have 3G or 4G/LTE network or WiFi access at this location, and about 1-2 GB left on your data plan for the meeting.
